Indonesia Announces Visa-Free Entry for 20 Countries to Boost Tourism and Strengthen International Relations

Indonesia has taken a significant step towards boosting tourism and strengthening international relations by announcing visa-free entry for citizens from 20 countries, including Taiwan. Scheduled to commence in October, this initiative aims to substantially bolster Indonesia's tourism industry while fostering closer ties with Taiwan and other nations.

"The visa-free entry process is nearing its final stages of completion, with a flexible list of the proposed 20 countries, including those expected to have the greatest economic impact," explained Sandiaga Uno, Indonesia's Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy. He emphasized that the list of countries, carefully selected for their anticipated economic contributions, is in its final stages. This initiative is pivotal in Indonesia's strategy to attract international tourists and stimulate domestic economic activity, attract investments, and advance digital economic initiatives.

Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is promoting the Five Super Priority Destinations program, focusing on five tourist destinations with their iconic characteristics. Danau Toba in North Sumatra, the largest volcanic lake in the world; Candi Borobudur in Central Java, the most visited single tourist attraction in the country; Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara, the host of the world racing MotoGP event in 2021; Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, the only natural habitat for Komodo Island in the world; and Likupang in North Sulawesi, known for its marine tourism with beautiful underwater panoramas. With the recent inclusion of visa-free entry for citizens from several countries, including Taiwan, Indonesia anticipates a surge in travelers eager to experience its natural beauty, vibrant culture, and iconic landmarks.

The visa-free entry initiative for Indonesian tourists offers the opportunity to enjoy Taiwan's diverse attractions, encouraging visitors to explore its rich cultural landmarks and natural beauty. Taipei 101 was ranked as the 9th tallest building in the world, stands alongside Taiwan's bustling night markets such as Raohe and Shilin, renowned historical sites like the National Palace Museum, and stunning natural wonders including Taroko Gorge and hot springs in Beitou and Wulai. For spiritual seekers, Taiwan offers revered temples like Longshan and Fo Guang Shan, while modern cities like Kaohsiung and Taichung feature vibrant art scenes, bustling shopping districts, and diverse cuisine. This initiative aims to promote cultural exchanges and strengthen the bonds between Indonesia and Taiwan by facilitating easier travel and exploration opportunities, encouraging mutual appreciation, and fostering collaboration.

Tourism plays a crucial role in Indonesia's economy, with the government aiming to welcome 17 million tourists by 2024, with 5.2 million already visiting in the first five months of this year, indicating a positive trend toward meeting this target. The proposal to extend visa-free access to 20 countries is in its final stages. It includes countries such as Australia, China, India, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Japan, Russia, Taiwan, New Zealand, Italy, and Spain, along with two additional countries from the Middle East.

The visa-free entry initiative represents a pivotal step for Indonesia, poised to expand its tourism sector and strengthen international partnerships. With its rich cultural heritage and diverse natural landscapes, Indonesia is set to welcome a new wave of global travelers eager to experience the allure of its islands and immerse themselves in its vibrant traditions. Moreover, this initiative provides Indonesians with increased opportunities to travel abroad, facilitating cultural exchanges and enriching their global perspectives. It also aims to foster collaboration with various countries in the tourism sector, enhancing diplomatic relations and promoting economic growth.
