By Alsina Betha

Nusantara: Indonesia's Bold Initiative to Create a Smart Forest City Integrating Technology and Sustainability, Setting a New Global Standard for Future Urban Development and Economic Innovation

The envisioned "Nusantara", or The Archipelago, aims to become the world's pioneering capital city with a "smart forest city" concept. The innovative project aims to blend cutting-edge technology with environmental sustainability, addressing Jakarta's congestion and sinking issues while creating new economic opportunities nationwide.

Central to the vision is a robust digital transformation strategy, focusing on high-capacity infrastructure, high-speed internet networks, and the integration of advanced technologies to support activities across the archipelago. The project is a cornerstone of the Indonesian government's 2045 Golden Indonesia vision, positioning Nusantara as a beacon of innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.

The relocation project, gradually unfolding from 2024 to 2025, is designed to foster innovation and sustainability. The Nusantara Capital City Authority has crafted a comprehensive blueprint emphasizing smart governance, green energy, and cutting-edge digital infrastructure. High-speed telecommunication networks, 5G connectivity, and extensive use of IoT and AI technologies are central to Nusantara's development, ensuring efficient transportation, enhanced public services, and robust data management.

Taiwanese businesses may have a prime opportunity to join the transformative journey. James Huang, Chair of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), recently led a delegation to Nusantara to receive detailed briefings on the city's progress and plans. Huang emphasized the potential for Taiwanese firms to play a pivotal role in smart city solutions and renewable energy. With several Taiwanese companies already showing interest, Nusantara offers fertile ground for innovation and investment.

Rusmin Lawin, an advisor to the Capital Authority, stated that the new capital aims to become a green and smart city, focusing on 12 main sectors, including renewable energy, transportation, and housing. He noted that all infrastructure is expected to be completed between 2035 and 2039, accelerating Kalimantan's development and achieving global recognition by 2040 to 2045. Lawin highlighted the interest of Taiwanese businesses, mentioning that several companies are keen on smart city projects, including waste-to-energy and healthcare initiatives.

One of the significant challenges, according to Nusantara National Capital Authority's Susantono, is envisioning the city of the future despite today's limitations. "Building a new city is not something that can be achieved overnight. My biggest hope for Nusantara is that it can be a model not only for us but for the world," Susantono remarked.

Nusantara epitomizes Indonesia's bold and innovative spirit, presenting a visionary model of sustainable urban living that promises to set global standards. The project has the potential to redefine the future of cities worldwide, serving as a blueprint for how technology, sustainability, and economic growth can be seamlessly integrated. Nusantara's success could inspire the world to rethink its strategies, fostering a new era of sustainable, technology-driven urbanization. As Indonesia works to bring the ambitious vision to life, the eyes of global leaders, industry experts, and innovators will be fixed on Nusantara, eager to see how the trailblazing capital city redefines the way we approach urban development on an international scale. For businesses globally, from Taiwan to every corner of the world, Nusantara represents a unique opportunity to be part of the groundbreaking legacy and contribute their expertise towards creating the city of the future.
