PT PLN Indonesia Eyes Partnership with Taiwan in Energy Transformation

By Alsina Betha

Through collaboration plans with Taiwanese institutions, PT PLN aims to expedite sustainable energy projects and benefit from knowledge sharing in technology deployment, research, and policy development.

Indonesia is proactively exploring avenues for a strategic partnership with Taiwan to advance green energy initiatives and expedite the transition to a sustainable future. This initiative reflects Indonesia's firm commitment to combating climate change and cultivating a greener, low-carbon economy. Leading this endeavor is Indonesia's state-owned electricity company, the State Electricity Company, known as PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), which actively seeks collaborations with Taiwanese institutions to harness Taiwan's expertise and technological advancements in green energy.

In the Indonesia Data and Economic Conference (IDE) Katadata 2024, Evy Haryadi, PT PLN's Director of Transmission and System Planning, emphasized the importance of increasing the proportion of renewable energy or energi baru terbarukan (EBT), sources in Indonesia's power generation. Acknowledging the challenges posed by fossil fuel dependence, Haryadi expressed optimism about potential partnerships with Taiwan, renowned for its advancements in renewable energy sectors such as solar and wind. PT PLN has taken significant steps towards reducing reliance on conventional energy sources, including halting plans for new coal-fired power plants and revising its Electricity Supply Business Plan or Rencana Usaha Penyediaan Tenaga Listrik (RUPTL) to set higher targets for renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and geothermal power.

Through collaboration plans with Taiwanese institutions, PT PLN aims to expedite sustainable energy projects and benefit from knowledge sharing in technology deployment, research, and policy development. This partnership holds immense potential for mutual benefits, offering opportunities for joint research and development initiatives, best practice sharing, and technology transfer. Not only will this collaboration contribute to reducing carbon emissions, but it will also drive economic growth, create employment opportunities, and enhance energy security for both nations.

Haryadi pointed out that PT PLN is also collaborating with financial institutions, energy organizations, and technology suppliers to meet the demands of energy transition, including projects such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). He hopes to cooperate with other countries to acquire the technologies necessary to achieve the government's net-zero emissions goal by 2060.

The future of the partnership between Indonesia and Taiwan in green energy is brimming with promise and potential. As they move forward together, they will not only drive innovation and economic growth but also inspire other nations to join hands in the pursuit of a sustainable future. By harnessing their collective strengths and expertise, Indonesia and Taiwan are poised to make significant strides towards a cleaner, greener world. This partnership stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing global environmental challenges and building a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.
